Poker is a game played by two or more people and can be played socially for pennies, or professionally for thousands of dollars. There are hundreds of different variations of poker, but they all share the same basic rules. The goal of the game is to make the best five card hand using your own two cards and the five community cards. If you bet and your opponents fold, you win the pot (all of the chips that have been bet so far).
Players are dealt 2 cards face down, and betting occurs in rounds. Each player can fold, check, call, or raise. The first to act is known as the button. The button is passed around the table in a clockwise direction after each round of betting.
After the flop, the turn, and the river, players reveal their hands. The winning hand is the one with the highest value. The order of the highest to lowest is: Royal flush, Straight flush, Four of a kind, Full house, and Two pair.
A kitty is typically established at the start of the game to collect money for new decks of cards and food and drinks. Generally, the dealer will burn a card after each deal to prevent the players from predicting which cards are coming next. The players will then split the kitty equally among themselves at the end of the game. Alternatively, if the players agree to a higher split, they can simply divide the high-denomination chips in the pot equally between themselves.
